RSTRENG effective-area calculator

Paste a river-bottom depth profile. DigSheet checks every possible subsection, finds the critical one and reports the minimum failure pressure, as in ASME B31G Level 2.

Inputs

Pipe
Advanced: safety factor / flow stress override

Leave blank to use SF = 1/F and the method's standard flow stress.

River-bottom profile

One position, depth pair per line (same length unit as above). Repeat a position to model a vertical step. Or paste depths only and set the spacing below.

How the RSTRENG effective-area method works

Real corrosion is rarely a neat rectangle. It is usually a shallow patch with a few deeper pits. B31G and Modified B31G assume the deepest pit runs the full length of the flaw, which throws away metal that is still there. The effective-area method behind Kiefner & Vieth's RSTRENG program uses the actual profile instead.

  1. Project the deepest reading at each axial position onto one line: the river-bottom profile.
  2. For every pair of points (start i, end j), integrate the metal-loss area A between them with the trapezoid rule, and take A0 = L·t.
  3. Compute the failure stress for that subsection with the Modified B31G Folias factor and flow stress.
  4. The subsection with the lowest failure pressure is the critical subsection. Its pressure is the answer.
for every subsection i→j: L = x_j − x_i A = ∫ depth dx (trapezoids) A0 = L·t z = L² / (D·t) M = √(1 + 0.6275z − 0.003375z²) (z ≤ 50; else 0.032z + 3.3) S_F = (SMYS + 10 ksi) · (1 − A/A0) / (1 − (A/A0)/M) P_F = min over all subsections of 2·S_F·t / D

DigSheet evaluates n(n−1)/2 subsections. That is about 20,000 for a 200-point laser profile, which takes milliseconds in a browser. The chart highlights the critical subsection, and the work table compares the result with Modified B31G on the same flaw.

FAQ

Is this the official RSTRENG software?

No. RSTRENG is a PRCI/Technical Toolboxes product. DigSheet implements the published effective-area equations independently and checks them against the effective-area prediction in Kiefner & Vieth's 1990 article. See the test results on the home page.

Do the profile ends need zero depth?

No. Enter whatever you measured. If the readings start and end at full wall, include those zero-depth points.

Can I paste from Excel?

Yes. Paste two columns (position, depth), or a single column of depths plus the spacing.
